Hello. We like podcasts, and we talk about them every day. Today we’re talking about a bunch of interesting stuff we heard in the podosphere, including stories about short stories and comedy becoming the new Rock & Roll.

Intro Music: Asbury - Covered in Acrylic from NPR Second Stage

iPhone coming to Canada

Dialed in From CNET: 23 - 26 minutes; Produced on Wednesdays

A couple interesting tidbits from CNET’s weekly mobile phone news podcast. First, Canada is finally getting iPhone. Rogers Wireless will shortly be selling the iPhone, but don’t be too quick to grab one. Apple will be releasing a much anticipated 3G version of the popular device sometime this summer. Also, T-Mobile is saying that they expect to have a Google Android-based phone out by the end of the year.

Stop Hating Short Stories

Books on the Nightstand: 20 min. Published Bi-weekly.

Some people say they don’t like short stories. Reasons: can’t follow a full plot, can’t have fun with the characters, etc. But a collection of short stories called Unaccustomed Earth just debuted at number 1 on the NYT Best Sellers for Fiction. This is big news in the book lover’s world. Here’s some quotes from short stories to wet your whistle:

  • Steven returned from the war without lips
  • When I came home from school for lunch, my father was wearing a backpack made of stone

Grand Theft Auto 4 is here

Daily PWN: 2 - 3 min. Produced semi-daily

After several delays, the long-awaited video game Grand Theft Auto has hit the shelves. Packed with crime, sex, and violence, this game has stirred up a number of political and social activists (e.g. MADD) claiming that it should not be sold or at least should only be sold to adults. Putting all that aside, the Daily PWN reviews the graphics, gameplay, and overall enjoyability of the title.

Comedy is More Rock & Roll than Rock & Roll

R3TV: 8-9 min. Published Fridays.

After the “comedy collapse of ‘92″ (Patton Oswalt) comics were forced to find alternative spaces… which ended up being music venues. Recently they’ve moved on to the Internet, and company has gone back to it’s purest form as it was in the 70s. It seems comedy is becoming the new Rock & Roll.

We’re back… like it or not. Today we’re talking about such things as living in a dungeon, and getting wiped out by bird flu. A really up beat show today! Here’s the notes:

Intro Music: CBC Radio 3 New Music Track of the Day: Hey Rosetta! - The Simplest Thing

No Sunlight for 24 Years

Slate Explainer Magazine: 3 min. Published twice weekly.

They include: vitamin D Deficiency, Rickets, High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Osteoporosis, Obesity, Asthma. Other than that, you might die, like one of the kids he fathered with her and also kept down there did. Other than that, you might be ok.

Toenail Fungus

The Medical Minute Podcast: 1 - 2 min. Produced tuesdays and thursdays

Yuckers! We’ve all seen it at some point. Those unhealthy-looking yellow or brown, brittle nails. They’re caused by a fungus that loves to hide where it’s dark and moist like underneath your toenails. There are antifungal medications, but they can take months to work because you have to wait until your toenail grows out.

Bird Flu Mutation: Less Lethal, More Dangerous

Health Ranger: About 30 min. Published Wednesdays.

The bird flu is now allowing people to live a bit longer, but it’s more contagious. This is common and it is evolution. If viruses have lower or slower kill rates, they have more time to spread and can gain ground a lot faster. The kill rate of Bird Flu has gone down from 90% to 50%, and the health organizations are really worried. If the kill rate goes down to 25% it could really get out of control and is now poised to follow the footsteps of SARS.

April Job Search Roundup

Secrets of the Job Hunt: 8 - 9 min. Produced bi-monthly

This podcast is all about job seeking, particularly using online tools like Monster, Snagajob, and Indeed. A funny story: apparently Monster.com drove a van up to the craigslist offices and started blasting music at full volume. Is this the kind of thing that goes on at Silicon Valley? Another intersting tidbit: The top 10 hardest jobs to fill for 2008. Guess which was #1: engineers!!

Canadian Snow Days vs. Iraqi War Days

UNICEF: 3 min. Produced twice per week.

When there is a lot of gunfire, schools get closed, but there is no going outside to play with friends. The kids stay at home hiding with their families for days at a time, and can only talk to their friends by phone. It’s also tough to study for exams with all the noise and the pits of fear in guts.

Iceland’s Clean Machines

This episode discusses Iceland’s progress at creating a hydrogen economy. Because fossil fuels are so expensive in Iceland, finding alternative sources of energy is very attractive. Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavík, has a hydrogen fueling station but very few cars use it. Iceland is hoping to have developed a hydrogen economy by the middle of the century, which is much sooner than most industrialized nations’ targets.

From Screen Savers to Rad

Occasional Podcast Review: various publications

Alex Albrecht, and Dan Trachtenberg, Jeff Cannata do the OPR, and reminice on the good old days of podcasting. 3 geeks unite over a good old fashioned game of D&D. Alex: the seasoned podlebrity from Digg and Screen Savers; Dan: from the “winding down” Geekdrome; and Jeff: emerging out of his lonely hollows that is his basement. Now they have big plans in the wake of their success, including jet packs and world domination. And they still call eachother by their D&D character names.
